STOP Press!! DVLA enters 21st Century, again!!

Sorry, too many exclamation marks in the introduction. This month sees the DVLA crawl further into the 21st Century with a new internet-based process for advising them when you sell your car. It’s not going to save any paper though because the vehicle keeper will still need a V5 (logbook) document, so the paper industry can breathe easily, however keepers will be able to advise the DVLA online of the change meaning there’s no longer a need to post the old document back to the DVLA, so perhaps shareholders in the Royal Mail should check their portfolios.

The process works as follows – once you have sold your car fill in the New Keeper Supplement (“green slip”) and give that to the buyer. Then go online to www.gov-uk/sold-bought-vehicle/ where you can tell the DVLA who you sold the vehicle to, provide relevant email addresses and both you and the buyer receive instant confirmation of the change of keeper and a new V5 is posted to the new owner within a few days. The process is the same if you sell your car to a trader or garage as a part exchange.

The DVLA will also refund the unused Road Fund left on the car at this point.

Of course if the keeper is not computer literate or doesn’t have access to the internet the V5 can still be posted through to the DVLA as per the current system.

However, it will be interesting to see how well this change is communicated by the DVLA. Last year’s abolition of paper tax discs was handled spectacularly poorly by the DVLA. At Alpha Contracts we received lots and lots of calls querying why replacement tax discs hadn’t arrived from worried drivers.

If you are considering part exchanging your vehicle for a new one call us at Alpha Contracts Leasing Limited for a valuation. We are very happy to take a client’s current car or van in part exchange for their new vehicle. Speak to one of the team on 01604 756620 or for details or go online at www.alphacontracts.co.uk and use our own 21st Century ‘chat’ facility and ‘speak’ to Alex, who is the youngest in the office and therefore able to understand how it all works!!
