Protecting your business from cyber crime: where to start

How would you feel if somebody broke into your business infrastructure and damaged your systems or stole your business data?

Cyber-crime is a $455 Billion cost on the global economy every year, and by 2019 it is predicted to become a $2.1 Trillion problem.

So, how do you currently protect your business from cyber-crime?

“We’ve got firewalls in place?”, “We use third-party email scanning services”, “We install anti-virus/anti-malware programs”

Hopefully it doesn’t come as a surprise to you but these points are no longer enough to protect your business from modern cyber threats.

Hackers rely on your employees not noticing the subtle signs that show their emails are not genuine. Emails can look like they are from a colleague, partner, customer, or friend, but in reality, your system may have been compromised. Branding, logos, employee identities, and job titles can be very easily replicated, which is making cyber scams increasingly effective and sophisticated.

The majority of hacks and scams begin with a tool that we use daily…yes you’ve guessed it, our beloved email. A report published by the Radicato Group shows that the number of worldwide email users will reach 2.9 billion by the end of 2019. This is over one-third of the worldwide population that will be at risk of cyber-crime attacks.

Here are some tips for your employees when using email:

* Do NOT click on any links within emails unless you are certain they are from a trusted source AND you are expecting the email

* Do NOT open any attachments within emails unless they are from a trusted source AND you are expecting the email

* Do NOT reply to emails that ask you for the business or your personal details unless you know that it is genuine

PEOPLE are the weakest link when it comes to your business security. The trick is to find the right combination of security solutions and educating your employees on how to be security smart.

Be very aware…

1. NO business is immune from cyber-crime.

2. NO security threat is too small.

3. NO precautions should be spared when it comes to the security of your business data.

Business security starts with internal knowledge. It takes one click of a link for malware code to be released into your system, compromising your security. These security issues are very real and very present.

If you are thinking I don’t know where to start, are unsure as to how well protected your business currently is, or you need help educating your workforce on how to spot untrustworthy content, call ACS on 01604 704 014 or email to seek help.
