A NORTHAMPTON College student has been shortlisted for a coveted national award aiming to recognise the rising stars of radio.
Will Oelrich, who is studying a BTEC in Multimedia Journalism at Booth Lane, is one of three finalists in the BBC Sounds Rising Talent 16-18 category of the Young Audio Awards.
Having secured a series of work experience opportunities with regional broadcast media, including BBC Radio Northampton and ITV Anglia, Will has developed his presenting skills on NLive Radio 106.9FM – the community-focused radio station run in partnership with The University of Northampton.
He regularly presents a weekly programme on Mondays dedicated to all things Cobblers and Saints and other local and community sports, as well as discussing national sports stories and producing in-depth documentaries on subjects including mental health in football.
Will said: “It’s a huge honour to have been shortlisted for these awards, it would be incredible to win it but getting to the final three is something I’m really proud of.
“I love what I do. Talking about football, in particular anything to do with Cobblers, is second nature to me and it’s something I’d love to do as a career. I’m very clear in where I see my future so I’m working hard to make contacts, get as much experience as I can and get my foot in the door.
“Coming to college has been great and I’ve learnt a lot from the tutors who have passed on years of industry experience and encouraged me to get out there and make myself known. Because of them I’ve had the opportunity to work on professional radio programmes and even be on TV.
“NLive has been a brilliant platform to develop my skills and presenting style. I really admire the likes of Gary Lineker and I’d love one day to do something similar. I’m determined to prove that you don’t have to be an ex-player to be a good pundit.”
The Young Audio Awards take place in London on March 27. The BBC Sounds Rising Talent award celebrates youngsters who represent the most exciting audio talent of their age. Winners will receive exclusive industry mentorship, studio tours and the chance to appear on national radio.
