Roller coaster experience for students

DURING half term, Bosworth students got to experience the STEM learning event on offer at Disneyland Paris. Based in the heart of this world-renowned theme park resort, the students got to discover how classroom theory is applied to the design and operation of the resort’s amazing roller coasters and thrilling rides and attractions.

Students got to stay at Disney’s Santa Fe Hotel at Disneyland Paris, including continental breakfast, with a Hopper ticket for both Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios.

They attended two curriculum-led seminars featuring subject-specific case studies, had access to interview Disneyland Paris Managers, view exclusive behind-the-scenes video footage, take part in an interactive workshop, a student challenge and complete subject-specific assignments. For attending the experience students take away a certificate of attendance and an education pack.

Students experienced the very latest roller coaster technology and learnt how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are used to build, test, theme, operate and maintain rides at the quality standards expected by the millions of guests visiting every year. During the two seminars and workshop, students also learn about the working practices at Disneyland Paris.

Roller coaster design is another topic, showing how the principles of Galileo and Newton play a major part in roller coaster design, the use of mathematical principles – algebra, trigonometry, geometry, designing with CAD/CAM, systems and control technology.

Other areas included in the experience were: audio animatronics, specifically control systems and engineering; materials, looking at properties of materials and components; analysing stress, mechanisms, maintenance and safety; theming, understanding the importance of graphic design, construction and surface finishes to meet customer needs; landscaping with water and plants along with the requirements of sustainability; special effects in terms of good product design and including the senses.

This experience proved an amazing way of taking what students are learning in the classroom and bringing it to life. It also gave them a real awareness of all the elements that go into making a new Disneyland attraction that will have lasting appeal to its customers, but most of all, it proved lots of fun to take part in the workshops and then test the rides afterwards for themselves.
