School ready with a warm welcome

CHILLY January weather may have come as a bit of a shock after 14 years in Australia, but the welcome couldn’t have been warmer for Wellingborough School’s new Head of Prep School, Sue Knox.

Born and raised in England, Sue initially followed a career in the corporate world, and her work with household names like Procter and Gamble and BT, took her to Paris and then Australia, where she decided 10 years ago to move to a career in education.

Her love of teaching combined with her corporate strategy skills led to her becoming head teacher of a prep school for some years before homesickness got the better of her and she and her family decided that a new life in England beckoned.

“I’m loving being back in this country, particularly at the wonderful Wellingborough School and even though I’m not quite used to the weather yet, the welcome I’ve had has been warm and friendly,” said Sue.

“The staff have made me feel very much at home and the children have been keen to find out what their new head teacher is like, they’ve had lots of questions to ask.”

One of Sue’s first tasks was to ask everyone, pupils and staff, to come up with two goals, an educational one and a personal one, and she will be reviewing those with everyone on a regular basis.

“Education today is about not just teaching children but helping them to prepare for their life beyond school and university, to be ready for the world that awaits them,” she explained. “Gone are the days when the teacher stood at the front and conducted the lesson. Today we want the children to think for themselves, to find new ways to approach things and new ways to do things.

“There’s a really strong family ethos at Wellingborough School, and I think that is the perfect environment to get children, particularly at Prep School age, to explore new things, to be open to new ideas and to challenge themselves but also to work together in collaboration. The staff and parents are a major part of helping them to do that, combined with the excellent facilities here, and that’s something that makes this school so successful.”
