Is there light at the end of the Brexit tunnel? Or is it just the headlights of an onrushing train? Shortly after you read this article we will be casting our votes, again, in a general election this time, and I would think most of us will be hoping for a positive result that produces a working majority in Parliament that will allow Brexit to be resolved, one way or another, and for the country to finally move forward.

As we all know, one of the most important elements of being in business, apart from having customers, raising invoices, getting paid, employing staff, paying your bills and just basically keeping going, is forward planning. The latter has almost been impossible for the last three years whilst we have waited, sometimes patiently, sometimes not, for our leaders to complete the process they were mandated to carry out. So hopefully after the election and a Christmas break you can blow the dust off your mothballed plans and look forward to 2020 and the next decade.

In the meantime, the busy folk in Westminster have announced plans to perhaps change the colour of the number plates on electric cars to green, it is good to know they have been spending their time wisely. Being less flippant, there is a positive side to this in that it will allow those cars to use restricted traffic lanes e.g. bus lanes to ease traffic flows and further encourage the uptake of those vehicles. But then of course where will you charge the damn things? Sometimes it feels like Groundhog Day writing this column!

In other hybrid developments, Volvo Cars have announced that driver and buyers of a new Volvo Plug in hybrid model (PHEV) will benefit from a year’s free electricity to charge their cars. The offer is open to both private and business users. To qualify customers must purchase their car before 30 June 2020, then Volvo use an app to calculate how many times the car was charged in the year and reimburse the customer based on the average price of electricity in the UK. The offer is capped, of course, so you can’t run your whole house off the back of your new Volvo.

Finally, a think tank has predicted the end of road signs and signals because new car connectivity will mean our cars can intelligently navigate their way to destinations and be aware of their location at any one time. The concept is called Naked Highway! At a time when at hot topic is the lack of a hard shoulder on smart motorways this makes the mind boggle.
