In building construction “topping out” is a builder’s rite, traditionally held when the last beam (or its equivalent) is placed at the top of a structure during its assembly. The practice of “topping out” a new building can be traced back to the ancient Scandinavian religious rite of placing a tree at the highest point of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits exiled in its construction. Designed and managed by architects, employer’s agents and quantity surveyors, GSSArchitecture, the scheme is a key feature of the future development of Kettering and is part of the 5,500 house expansion of the town. The new school will be operated by the Peterborough C of E Diocese and will provide modern, flexible and inspiring learning spaces, both internally and externally, for 420 primary school pupils. The school is part of a larger provision of shops, community facilities and associated parking, and has been designed to integrate with the overall residential development and to allow community access to school facilities. Tom Lyons, Partner of GSSArchitecture, said, “The topping out ceremony of the new primary school is an exciting milestone in its development.  After all the design consultation and building work, it is the point in the project when everyone involved can start to see the building taking shape and to get a real feel for its quality and look, both internally and externally.”
