Trophy for pie maker

A GAMMON and Mushy Pea Pie, produced by Northamptonshire-based pie connoisseurs Dunkleys Limited has been crowned Class Champion in the Pub Pie class at the 2017 British Pie Awards.

The family-owned pie makers from Wellingborough, was given the Pub Pie Class Champion accolade for its Gammon & Mushy Pea Pie at the ninth annual Britsh Pie Awards, based on a range of criteria, including appearance, texture and taste. The sweet and savoury pie producer also received three Highly Commended awards for its Christmas Dinner Pie, Chicken & Chorizo Pie and British Shin of Beef Suet Pudding.

The awards took place in Melton Mowbray on 10 March and saw a record number of 154 producers from across the country entering their pies into the competition. Nearly 900 pies, including over 200 beef or steak pies, 90 pork pies, 137 chicken pies and 46 pasties, were judged at this year’s awards by over 100 judges.

Matthew O’Callaghan, Chairman of the British Pie Awards, said: “The calibre of entries this year was outstanding. The recipe innovation across the board was remarkable, reinventing the British classic with an innovative variety of filling combinations, spices and sauces.

“The entrants really demonstrated what the future of the great British pie looks like; and Dunkleys’ pie was a well deserved winner. Well done!”
