It is hoped amateur bakers of the town will rise to the challenge of entering this year’s Great Wellingborough Bake Off.

The cake contest, based on the popular BBC series starring Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, will take place on Saturday, September 17, from 10am – 5pm.

Cake makers will get the chance to showcase their signature bake and showstopper creation in six different categories.

There are a limited number of entries in each challenge, which include identical cup or fairy cakes, the Victoria sponge, the chocolate cake and an Olympics themed cake category.

There are also two different age categories for children under 12 and young people aged between 12 and 16.

It is the fourth cake competition which has been organised by the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) to find Wellingborough’s star baker.

John Cable, Manager of the Wellingborough BID, which stages events to promote the town centre through its Discover Wellingborough campaign, said: “Once again, we are very much looking forward to holding the Great Wellingborough Bake Off.

“The popularity of our very own contest has grown enormously in the four years we’ve been holding the event and because everyone is also watching the show at home, we know they want a chance to show off their excellent baking skills.

“Who knows, perhaps this year’s coveted winner will be a contestant on next year’s series?”

Bakers will need to submit their entry forms by Saturday, September 10.  Forms are available in Rowlatts on Silver Street and Sweetbitz on Cambridge Street and also on the Discover Wellingborough website.

Once the cake conquerors have been crowned winners and received their prizes, the bakes will then be sold off during a Macmillan’s Coffee Afternoon and all proceeds will go towards funds for the charity.

The judging panel, which will be unveiled at a later date, will be looking for an even bake and no soggy bottoms.
