Zoom… who was that speeding driver?

WELL, the chances are it was your sales director!

A recent survey by the Gocompare guys, presumably carried out whilst they weren’t recording annoying jingles for their TV advert, identified that the most likely occupation to have collected a speeding fine in the last five years were sales directors with nearly 20 per cent of them having been caught red handed. Presumably hot on the trail of their latest big deal at the time.

The list itself makes interesting reading, five out of the top ten places are taken by either a company director or chief executive, not the same person you realise (I just read that bit back to myself!) Apparently it seems that their position entitles them to a bigger, more powerful vehicle which is why they have difficulty staying within the speed limits. But just before you think this is a white collar survey, standing proudly in third place representing the ordinary man and breathing literally down the big dogs’ necks are oil rig workers, perhaps keen to get home after six weeks away from home… ahem. Further down the list are surgeons, obviously a life or death emergency there, and also surveyors, chartered or otherwise, although I don’t know the difference!

But exceeding the speed limit doesn’t guarantee that you will receive points on your licence, you can sometimes attend a driving course to avoid them. However from 1 March this year using a handheld mobile phone whilst in control of a motor vehicle will incur six, yes SIX, penalty points, not to mention the £200 fine. Apart from stating the obvious fact that it is incredibly dangerous, it is a very quick method of losing your driving licence.

In previous articles I have mentioned your company car policy, which should cover all drivers who travel for business purposes not just those driving company cars. This, of course, does explicitly forbid the use of any handheld device whilst in control of a motor vehicle, doesn’t it?

The majority of new cars and vans we supply these days have Bluetooth as standard, so no excuse for using a handheld phone. Some even have speed limiters (sorry Mr Sales Director).
