Fulfilment firm targets growth in the USA

Chief executive Emma Dempsey

Site expansion aims to meet demand from UK retailers

Massive expansion in the USA is set to follow major investment in its fulfilment site by a Northampton-based company.

Increases in international shipping costs into the USA have highlighted the benefits of domestic shipping for e-commerce firms and outsourced fulfilment services provider James and James has unveiled a major expansion of its American base in Ohio.

The site is now almost three times as large at 80,000 sq ft and means that James and James can support its clients selling into the US market. It allows the company to protect customers from changes in international shipping with increased options on where to ship from. Retailers can trade more confidently and efficiently, the company said, with reduced delivery times, greater reliability and at a lower cost. Brands such as Frenchie Bulldog, Crafted London and Lisa Eldridge depend on James and James to enable them to sell to the lucrative US market.

The move has also created 15 new jobs.

Chief executive Emma Dempsey said: “The US provides a great additional market for UK retailers, with many shifting their focus from the EU to US after Brexit. This new fulfilment centre provides the certainty and cost benefits of domestic shipping to businesses who are trying to reach or grow in that region.

“Ohio is not only well-placed to serve the East Coast population but is also within a one-day drive to most major populaces. Offering clients access to a strong technology platform and multiple sites from which to trade and ship internationally provides greater protection from changes in international trade, and reduces shipping costs and time to market for those trying to scale.”

This new Ohio facility currently employees 37 full-time employees. James and James is also looking to open a new fulfilment centre on the West Coast, while continuing to grow operations in the UK and EU, among other regions globally. It also has a European site in The Netherlands.
