IN the tranquil surroundings of the Hopping Hare in Duston, they’re getting ready for a celebration of one of the most famous violent uprisings in French history.

A menu celebrating all things Gallic has been drawn up by head chef Jennie Bowmaker to celebrate Bastille Day. From Thursday, 10 July to Monday, 14 July, which is Bastille Day itself, the Hopping Hare will be serving its French Bistro Bastille Menu, which brings together French cuisine and the innovative and stylish approach of the restaurant.

Starters include pea and roasted garlic soup, crispy bread-crumbed frogs’ legs with gribiche tarragon mayonnaise, poached and smoked salmon rillettes with pickled cucumber and lemon vinaigrette-dressed frisee, Burgundy snails and sautéed wild mushrooms and pressed foie gras terrine with caramelised endive, apricot and green peppercorn chutney and crispy gingerbread.

The main courses are led by thyme-marinaded cote de porc, as well as trout Nicoise tartine, coq au vin with potato Dauphinoise and buttered spinach, confit duck leg and Toulouse sausage casserole and Roquefort and leek tart with a lemon glazed walnut and roasted beetroot salad.

For dessert, there’s traditional French cheese, or raspberry millefeuille, brioche pain perdu with caramelised apricots with Cointreau, dark chocolate crème brulee and pear and star anise tarte tatin. The Bastille Day menu is priced at £20 for two courses and £25 for three.

Forthcoming special events at The Hopping Hare over the next few months include a Greek menu from 14 to 16 August (£17.95 for two courses and £21.95 for three) and a Special Fish Menu in September (£20 for two courses and £25 for three). Full details of these will be announced shortly.

In addition, there will be a special Father’s Day menu on Sunday 15 June, costing three courses for £24.50 and £12.25 for children. See the website for full details.
