Homes site salutes town’s shoe-making heritage

Megan Sanders visits the showhome’s bedroom, influenced by the company’s history of making army boots during the First World War

The rich heritage of almost 150 years of shoemaking has inspired a development of new homes in Rushden.

Davidsons Homes has opened the showroom on its 80-home development at Sanders Field, off Northampton Road.

The design has been inspired by the history of local shoe manufacturer Sanders & Sanders and company director Megan Sanders stepped away from her desk to officially open the new development.

“It was a pleasant surprise to discover that Davidsons Homes had not only been inspired by our family’s heritage in the town when naming the new development but also when designing the showhome,” she said. “We are thrilled to have been invited along to the launch.”

Sanders & Sanders has manufactured footwear in Northamptonshire since the business was founded by brothers William and Thomas Sanders in 1873. Today it produces more than 2,000 pairs of shoes and boots every week at its factory in Spencer Road, from where it has traded for the past century, and exports to more than 30 countries.
