EVER-CHANGING developments in IT mean it can never be a waste of time to learn or improve computer skills.

Training costs can be an obstacle for many businesses but, by taking advantage of Government funding, the Rushden Learning Centre can offer professional training courses from as little as £20.

The Learning Centre on Rectory Road, Rushden, has trained more than 4,500 local people since opening eight years ago.

Manager Kathryn Squires and her team are able to offer advice about the different opportunities available, ranging from short IT tasters to accredited IT user and accountancy courses.

Courses are open to anyone over the age of 18. Businesses can arrange courses for their employees or individuals can contact the centre direct.

Current courses cover Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 from an Entry Level Award up to a full Level 3 Certificate. The centre offers both fully taught courses and open learning, where learners can learn at their own pace using workbooks with a trainer on hand if they get stuck. The fully taught classes are best suited to beginners and open learning is for learners who already have some knowledge of the Microsoft Office packages. All equipment and books are supplied by the centre and applications covered include Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher.

Kathryn said: “There are real benefits for people who take the time to complete the courses. We charge a small administration charge but most of our courses are free. We simply ask learners to make a commitment of at least four hours a week. In return, they can make the most of the opportunity which will help them gain new skills and improve their efficiency within the work place”

The centre, which has convenient free car parking, is open six days a week, Monday to Thursday from 10am to 8pm, Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm, enabling people to fit their learning around their busy lifestyles.
