OPUS Energy, a leading independent business energy supplier, is extending its successful partnership with Northampton College for its apprenticeship scheme.

The company has been working with Northampton College since 2012, when they first launched their apprenticeship scheme.

Since then the scheme has formed a key role in their recruitment and retention strategy, bringing local talent into the business.

They are delighted to build on its ongoing success and are looking to extend this again into 2015.

Local to the Northampton area, Opus Energy is passionate about having highly motivated and loyal employees, and they have embraced the apprenticeship scheme and the opportunities it provides to connect with the local community.

The apprenticeship scheme is a great chance for the company to attract a vital pool of talented individuals who are able to both experience work life within the company and achieve NVQ qualifications. The apprentices grow and develop in line with the core values of the business.

Stephen Smith, Learning and Development Officer at Opus Energy, is responsible for the day-to-day management of the scheme.

Stephen said: “Taking on apprentices gives us the opportunity to provide chances to those people who need it most, in particular people who are struggling to find the work they want due to lack of experience.

“We invest a lot of time and effort into the support and training we provide our apprentices and as a result we find that they are extremely committed to the business. We also ensure we offer them a competitive salary so that they feel as valued as any of our employees.”

Working closely with Opus Energy, the college developed a tailored package that includes functional skills, support on site and a bespoke apprenticeship workshop that runs in partnership with the company’s employee induction sessions.

After initially recruiting 10 apprentices in 2012, the programme was found to be an all-round success, and a further 16 apprentices have since been recruited with the college’s help as a result.

When talking about the assistance received from the college, Melanie Berman, Learning and Development Manager at Opus Energy, said: “The support we have received from Northampton College is excellent. We are in close, regular contact with the

Business Centre and have quarterly meetings to discuss the scheme’s progress, new opportunities and any changes we feel are needed to further the success of our apprentices.

“Northampton College is local to our business and has a good understanding of the area, so our continued partnership has been mutually beneficial. The team always takes the time to help us find the right people and keeps us updated about new candidates and opportunities. The success of our apprenticeship scheme is a reflection of the hard work and support we receive from the College, and the talent in the local area.”
