Meeting employers training needs

THOSE familiar with NITAL will be aware they are a specialist engineering and manufacturing training provider who have been providing apprenticeships in and around Northamptonshire for almost 50 years.

However, just over 12 months ago, NITAL established their new purpose-built training facility in Kettering to meet the training needs of engineering and manufacturing employers in the region. The main focus of the academy is to train and develop individuals with the correct fundamentals to ensure they are adequately prepared for the working environment.

NITAL can offer training for those either looking to secure a career in engineering and manufacturing, those looking to upskill, refresh their skills and knowledge or gain a greater understanding of an engineering subject matter. This can be through apprenticeships, full time level 2 study (those aged 16 to 18) and short courses either at NITAL’s facility on Kettering Venture Park, or on site if suitable equipment and workspace is available.

In recent times, NITAL have seen a significant increase in demand for specialist training delivery and short courses. A good example of this is a scenario encountered at apprentice employer Marren Group of Wollaston. Marren’s Operations Manager said: “Marren had been spending several hundred pounds per month employing the services of a subcontracted welder to attend our workshop facility in order to repair stainless steel catering equipment. Already having a successful apprenticeship programme in place with NITAL, we decided to approach them to see if they could suggest a more cost effective solution.

“NITAL were able to design a bespoke welding training course based on our individual requirements. This allowed four members of staff (three apprentices and one manager) to have a full day of in-house training at a fixed price. Our costs were recuperated within the first two months.

“Everyone involved commented on what a success the training was.”

Alongside training delivered on site, NITAL can offer short introductory courses in; milling, turning, hand fitting, CAD, MIG TIG MMA welding and a range of other basic engineering manufacturing programme at their facility in Kettering alongside more advanced upskilling programmes.
