Business born out of personal experience

HOME Instead Senior Care East Northants was established with a friend nearly seven years ago by husband and wife team Mark and Rosina Darnell, to offer at-home care services to the elderly and younger disabled people.

They decided to open their own Home Instead franchised office as they all had previous first-hand experience of how hard it was to find good quality care for their own parents. Unfortunately, the friend had to retire after three years due to her own and her parents’ declining health.

Part of a worldwide organisation of some1,100 offices, Home Instead East Northants provides in the region of 14,000 hours of care per month, and serves elderly and disabled people living in North and East Northamptonshire and North Bedfordshire. This encompassing the principal towns of Rushden, Higham Ferrers, Wellingborough and Kettering and all the other surrounding smaller towns and villages.

Offering services ranging from companionship, light housekeeping, meal preparation, transport to appointments, personal care and specialist dementia support. Home Instead regards it as a special privilege to look after people with varying needs and conditions, with compassion and empathy. Some clients receive one hour of housekeeping help a week, while for others 24-hour specialist dementia support is required. Others may only require help during a family break or respite period. The services are completely adaptable and variable to suit client and family requirements.

Home Instead is able to put personalised care packages in place to meet individual, changing needs, generally within 24 hours. All caregivers are highly trained and vetted to provide person-centered care, to ensure a return to normal health and wellbeing is optimised during the period of support.

All staff have enhanced DBS checks and must provide four references before training begins. Caregivers are also carefully selected for their empathy and nurturing qualities, their caring and respectful approach to the elderly and younger disabled people, and their willingness to match their valuable skills with their clients’ own requirements.

The business is registered with the Care Quality Commission and provides its services to privately paying clients and also the NHS continuing healthcare service, and those with personal budgets and in receipt of direct payments.

Mark Darnell said: “For us, setting up Home Instead East Northants gave us the opportunity to put into action our vision of supplying the means for people to remain living with dignity and independently in their own homes, with the care and support that their team of caregivers provide.

“It’s very important to us that all the support we provide is individually planned for each client, with input always obtained from the client and their families or advocates. We never rush visits as we understand it’s not just about getting the necessary ‘jobs’ done but also that it is important to spend time supporting clients on a social and emotional level as well and that the relationship between our caregivers and the client is a good one.”
