Adding a little fizz to the occasion

CHILLING out after a long day at work, or spending time at the weekend in the open air with the family, you won’t find many places to beat The Royal Oak at Cogenhoe.

In the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside, the traditional pub is an ideal spot for a quiet drink, a spot of lunch or an evening meal. When the weather is fine, the attractive, enclosed garden is the perfect place to unwind.

It’s all part of The Royal Oak’s relaxed and traditional approach – something that played a major part in it being a finalist in Food Pub of the Year category at the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards last year.

The menu remains the same for lunch and dinner, with an additional sandwich board for lunchtime diners, if they’d prefer, as well as the recent addition of a range of jacket potatoes with fillings from favourites like cheese and tuna to something a little different, like aromatic duck and plum sauce.

Japanese king prawns with sweet chilli sauce are the perfect starter or lunch, while what could be nicer than spicy Etna olive, or melon with mozzarella and prosciutto with Sicilian red pesto dressing.

Of course, the summer can’t be relied upon entirely, so there’s plenty of more substantial fare if things get unseasonal, including sirloin steak Marsala with mushrooms, mustard and cream; or traditional fish and chips with ale batter, peas and tartare sauce.

Summer is a time for fruit and the desserts reflect this. The Royal Oak kitchen team have come up with a range of muddles – Passionate (with passion fruit and mango sorbet, crushed meringue and ice cream), Summer Berry (with berries, cream and white chocolate and raspberry ice cream) and Peach (with peaches, Amaretti biscuits, ice cream and Amaretto liqueur).

For those who just want to relax with a glass of something cold and refreshing, the bar has a good stock of well-kept ales and there’s a wide selection of wines and spirits – as well as they Summer Fizz range, which includes Grey Goose Le Grande Fizz, a mix of Grey Goose vodka, elderflower and soda for a long, refreshing treat.
