Innovative approaches in the further education sector

GSSArchitecture have developed numerous spaces to accommodate collaborative and independent learning for Further Education students. By incorporating contemporary workspaces and non-traditional teaching approaches, a flexible working environment can be created to prepare post-16 students for later life.

GSS have been involved with several notable projects including the National College for Motorsport based in the heart of British motorsport racing at Silverstone. The college provides fully equipped workshops and classrooms, which have been designed by GSS to combine both the practical and theoretical training of students and apprentices in the motorsport industry. Run by Tresham College of Further and Higher Education, the National College for Motorsport currently trains full-time students and apprentices from across the UK for a career in the motorsport and high performance engineering industry at one of the UK’s most prestigious venues.

David Higham, Vice Principal at Tresham College said: “The fantastic facility is able to provide skills training for young people and those who wish to pursue a career in motorsport, supporting the sector by developing the new talent of tomorrow. GSSArchitecture worked tirelessly to ensure the space is suitable for a combination of practical and theoretical training, incorporating the wow factor every building needs to inspire learning.”

More recently, GSSArchitecture acted as architects and lead consultants for Space Studio West London which now accommodates 300 students, specialising in space, aerospace, science and maths. The school has developed a new approach to learning which includes teaching through enterprise projects and works closely with industry to give students the opportunity to gain real life experience.

The contemporary design of this project incorporates open-plan elements, such as central learning and social spaces and a new cafe.

Principal Andy Morgan said: “It is fantastic to have a building specifically designed to support our pioneering approach to education, as one guest commented it seems more like a work place than a school.”

Additional Further Education projects currently under construction include major city centre masterplanning and regeneration schemes delivering new colleges at the heart of cities and communities. Such projects often include careful consideration of new build and remodelling of existing buildings such as the GSS designs for the new and remodelled Bath College campus at the heart of the historic world heritage site in the city centre.

Tom Lyons, Partner of GSSArchitecture, said: “Every Further Education project delivered by GSS is designed to create a range of sophisticated spaces that benefit from both formal and informal opportunities for personalised learning. We are proud to have worked on a number of innovative projects which now provide bespoke learning environments to prepare students for their professional careers”.
