A year of growth and change

THIS has been a year of growth and change in the UK for logistics services provider Dachser, particularly for the Northampton branch, which moved into its brand new, purpose-built Logistics Centre at the end of March.

“It hardly seems possible, but we’ve been in our new home at Thomas Dachser Way for over seven months now,” reflected John Goodman, Dachser’s General Manager , Midlands & North, and responsible for the Northampton branch.

“Having all our activities in Northampton under one roof on a new site with room for further expansion has certainly created a very positive working environment, and at the same time we have seen our volumes of business grow in excess of our expectations.”

Moving into the new premises was the culmination of a project lasting almost two years. The assessment of suitable and available sites in the vicinity began in May 2012, and the first pallets were unloaded into the new logistics centre on the 24 March 2014.

“Not only has the opening of our new facility expanded our opportunities to develop more and more business with our existing as well as potential new customers, it has also generated a very high level of interest from our colleagues at our Dachser branches in Europe,” added John Goodman. “For that reason, they are pushing very hard to develop freight business to the UK with their own customers, and this is also very much adding to the volumes of cargo we are now handling.”

Nick Lowe, Dachser’s UK Managing Director, is very pleased with the positive developments that have occurred, and can clearly see the benefits which have been created from the major investment decision that was made.

“A bespoke logistics centre such as ours, constructed to our own design on a freehold basis, represents a major commitment to the future of our business in the UK in general and Northampton in particular,” he explained. “It further strengthens our position as a key component in Dachser’s European network.”

The figures are impressive. For Dachser UK overall, including its branches in Rochdale and Dartford, 2014 has so far seen a 10 per cent increase in sales turnover, shipments and tonnes handled, and the rate of growth is getting stronger as each month passes. In September and October, in Northampton alone, a 20 per cent annual growth rate was recorded. Dachser is certainly using to great effect the opportunities afforded by the creation of its impressive new flagship!
