FURNITURE restorers are some of the latest customers of specialists Northants Leather Chemicals Ltd.
The management team of the Northampton-based business, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017, has always taken pride in taking fresh opportunities.
The latest initiative has seen the company expand its product range to meet the needs of individuals who might be looking to change the colour of a treasured leather sofa or use balm to restore a book’s leather cover.
Other products like oils and dyes are favourites of craft workers looking for specialist products for their work, a range of bridle and saddle finishes and a supply of leathers for Aston Martins.
Managing Director Ian Bollard, said: “There have been a lot of changes in the leather industry so it important that we keep moving with the times. There is growing demand from private individuals for this type of specialist product, so we thought it would made good business sense to expand our range.”
Clients come from all sectors including a Devon-based forest worker looking for natural tanning materials to use on deer skin and another who wanted to colour-match a dye to give a fresh lease of life to a tired-looking sofa.
The company was founded in 1987 by Malcolm Bradshaw, and Ian, who had hands-on experience in the leather industry, joined in 1994. Malcolm died four years ago, and Ian bought out the company which is based at North Portway Close, Round Spinney Industrial Estate. The five-strong team includes Ian’s son Ricki, who is the company’s operations director.
The company’s extensive network stretches across Europe with products brought in from the USA and Brazil. The company’s industrial products include pigments, vegetable extracts, compacts, fillers, flame retardants and lacquers. Other products are developed on-site by the company’s specialists.
Ian said: “Our extensive experience in the industry means we can offer advice and support about what particular product is required to do the job. We have the resources and the technical expertise to work closely with customers to develop leading edged products.
“We can work on-site trialling new processes and give clients direct access to overseas experts.”
