New town planning apprenticeship launched

MOULTON College has become one of only four colleges in the UK to offer a Level 3 Town Planning Technical Support Apprenticeship.

The new two?year apprenticeship has been introduced with the support of the Royal Town Planning Institute and builds on the college’s existing curriculum areas of construction and the built environment.

Peter Thom, Employer Engagement Officer at Moulton College, said: “We’re delighted to launch this exciting new apprenticeship here at Moulton. It is the first step towards a career in planning for young people across the country.

“Our initial group of apprentices have just completed their first week at the college and will be returning for their second week in December.”

Current employers taking advantage of the new apprenticeship scheme are Lincolnshire County Council, Stratford-Upon-Avon District Council, the Environment Agency, the Coal Authority, Roger Coy Partnership and CALA Homes (Midlands) Ltd.

Keri Monger, who is studying for the apprenticeship while working for the Environment Agency, said: “The Town Planning Technical Support Apprenticeship so far has been a good introduction into the wider planning world as it has enabled me to focus on areas that I wouldn’t necessarily look at on a day-to-day basis in my job. I am looking forward to the other modules and the variety of skills that I will be able to develop. I feel it will benefit my career progress and I would recommend it to anyone who has just started out in a planning role.”

Modules included within the new apprenticeship are sustainable construction, building regulations, topographical surveying, construction technology and design, town planning processes and policies, and ICT for construction and the built environment.

Peter commented: “As one of only four providers of this apprenticeship in the UK, we expect to see more and more businesses in the industry approach us to take advantage of this opportunity that is now available to them.

“All of our apprentices are eligible for free student membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute and can progress to Chartered Membership through educational or work-based routes.”

The apprenticeship is being offered on a block release basis which means students will study at Moulton a week at a time for 12 weeks spread over two years – allowing students from across the UK to attend Moulton and take advantage of the superb on-site accommodation.
