Learn how to be dementia friendly

CORBY businesses are learning how to become more dementia friendly and inclusive in the lead up to Dementia Action Week from 11 to 17 May thanks to the support of a steering group, led by Isobel Mann, a wills, trusts and probate specialist at local law firm Bray & Bray.

The Corby Dementia Steering Group has been created with the specific aim of enabling local people with dementia to live well in Corby and continue participating in everyday activities, and is made up of local businesses, organisations and community representatives.

“According to the Alzheimer’s Society, two-thirds of people with dementia still live in the community and 10 per cent of those go out less than once a month,” said Isobel, a specialist in elderly client law, regional director for Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) for the East Midlands region and a fully accredited member of STEP.

“The steering group was set up last year in order to help Corby to become a genuinely dementia-friendly community by providing advice and support to local organisations and creating greater cohesion between the services available to people living with dementia in the area.

“The private client team at Bray & Bray is passionate about supporting people living with dementia, with many of us being Dementia Friends or Dementia Champions. The steering group enables us to further enhance and tailor our service offering to clients and families affected by dementia and enable us to signpost people to the right services where needed.”

On 12 May, the group is hosting an event at The Core at Corby Cube, where there will be a dementia friendly film screening, stalls and demonstrations showcasing the services available to support those living with dementia and their carers and Dementia Friends sessions and support.

Isobel added: “We welcome Corby businesses and residents, particularly those living with dementia, to come along to our sessions and events and get involved in any way they can so we can make the improvements needed to achieve dementia friendly status for Corby.”

The group’s next meetings are at 9.30am at Bray & Bray’s officesat Corby Enterprise Centre on the following dates: Tuesday 17 March, Tuesday 7 April and Tuesday 5 May.

Any organisations or individuals wishing to attend or find out more should contact Isobel Mann at or call 01536 851050.
