A local for the locals by locals

IT’S a rare treat when you find everything you could possibly want in a local pub – but The Old Swan at Earls Barton pretty much manages to achieve that, having listened to what the customers want.

Run by locals for locals, The Old Swan offers a wide selection of ales, wines and spirits, as well as excellent pub food, a friendly relaxing atmosphere, and live entertainment to suit all tastes.

Landlords Paul Dexter and Keith Goddard have recently overseen a refurbishment of the kitchen and the pub now prides itself on its weekday menu and its Sunday lunches, which are fast building a strong reputation with hungry diners.

The front bar boasts an open fire – very popular at this time of year – while the music-themed back bar hosts live events from blues and jazz on the last Wednesday of every month to guest live acts and, for those who think they can do better themselves, the last Thursday of every month is Karaoke night.

Every Wednesday is Ladies Night, when a double gin and tonic or a 20cl bottle of prosecco is just £4.95, after 9pm every Tuesday there’s free port and cheese, while every other Monday is Quiz Night.

Paul Dexter said: “We want to serve good honest pub food and Sunday lunches, and give customers somewhere to sit down with friends and enjoy a drink, without them having to think about driving out of the village every time. We’re passionate about our food and our well-stocked bar, along with a friendly team who make everyone feel welcome.”

The daily menu, available from noon to 8pm, includes a range of appetisers and sharing platters as well as sandwiches and ciabattas, salads and baked potatoes, and main courses from fish pie to rib of beef. Sunday Lunch is served from noon to 5pm and costs £9.95 or £7.95 for a smaller portion and the roast meats on offer include beef, pork or turkey. There’s also a selection of starters and desserts, and vegetarian options are available.

The pub can also cater for weddings, christenings, wakes and private functions.

The Old Swan, at 8 The Square, Earls Barton, is open from noon to 11pm every day except Fridays and Saturdays, when it is open until midnight. Call 01604 810044 for reservations, email or visit the website www.theoldswan.pub
