Supporting the future of the industry

FIVE star housebuilder Barratt Homes is supporting the future of the construction industry by welcoming two new joinery apprentices to the division.

William Yates, 23, and Jake Schultz, 18, were delighted to be accepted onto the apprenticeship to gain hands-on experience in carpentry alongside studying at college.

The apprentices are now training with top industry professionals four days a week to develop new skills in carpentry in the hopes of pursuing it as a career afterwards.

William Yates, from Northampton, is currently studying at Moulton College for an NVQ Level 2 in Site Carpentry and a Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry.

He is based at Ladywell Park in Wellingborough and was attracted to working at Barratt Homes because of its fantastic reputation five star housebuilder.

William said: “I’m enjoying learning a trade that I want to pursue as a career in and I feel like with the support from Barratt Homes I am already progressing and becoming more confident.

“I am learning new skills from the professionals that Barratt employ which is helping me to meet the high standards of work that Barratt expect for their houses.

“I’m most looking forward to learning how to fit a kitchen and becoming more independent when I am working.

“My career goals are to finish my qualification, work on enhancing my trade for a few years and eventually go into site management after I am satisfied with my onsite experience.”

Jake Schultz, who is based at Barratt Northampton’s St Margaret’s View development in Crick, is currently studying for an NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry, also at Moulton College. He hopes to gain as much knowledge on carpentry as possible whilst on site for four days each week.

Jake, who is also from Northampton, said: “I stumbled across the apprenticeship application by accident and knew immediately that it was something I wanted to pursue.

“Barratt Homes has a brilliant reputation and it’s great to be able to work with experienced carpenters and utilise their knowledge.

“So far it’s been a great experience and it’s really helped learn new skills that will help me in the future.

“Barratt Homes is known for looking after its staff and there is room to progress, which is very promising for an apprentice like me starting out.”

Andrew Swindell, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Northampton, said: “We are delighted to welcome both William and Jake to the team and I’m happy to hear that they are both settling in well.

“Apprenticeships are a great way for students to gain hands-on experience away from a classroom environment.

“Here at Barratt Northampton we pride ourselves on not only building high quality homes but looking after our staff.”
