AFTER both serving within the Household Calvary Regiment of the British Army, twin brothers William and John Yates have been accepted onto Barratt Homes construction trainee programmes.
William Yates from Northampton was accepted onto the Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship Scheme while just one month later his twin brother John was accepted onto the Armed Forces Acceleration Programme.
John has started work at the five star housebuilders’ Brooklands development in Milton Keynes whilst his brother is based across both Ladywell Park and Lyveden Fields developments in Wellingborough and Corby.
Both John and William were introduced to the housebuilder by their elder sister, Martha Wood, who works at the division’s head office as a Marketing Executive.
John served as a Lance Corporal in the Household Cavalry Regiment alongside his brother for more than five years before he applied to the Armed Forces Acceleration Programme.
He said: “I wanted to do something where I had more responsibility and the construction industry has always been an interest of mine because of the diversity of what happens on site.
“The programme is helping me build on existing skills such as discipline, organisation, commitment, integrity, loyalty and respect for others which are all transferable and are always being used and improved in my new role.
“The scheme is helping me considerably to build my knowledge of the industry and also my career. Not every company is willing to take on a person with no specific industry experience so I am very lucky to have been placed onto to this programme and to be offered the position I am in.
“Working with my brother and sister gives us lots to talk about; I use to serve with my brother in the same regiment so it’s familiar territory.”?
The Armed Forces Acceleration Programme is accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and takes 12 months to complete through a combination of classroom-based training and on-the-job experience.
William, who served in the Household Cavalry as a Trooper, started his apprenticeship last year and is now training with top industry professionals four days a week to develop new skills in carpentry.
He is also studying at Moulton College one day a week for an NVQ Level 2 in Site Carpentry and a Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry.
He said: “I’m enjoying learning a trade that I want to pursue as a career in and I feel that with the support from Barratt Homes I am already progressing and becoming more confident.
“I am learning new skills from the professionals that Barratt employ which is helping me to meet the high standards of work that Barratt expect for their houses.?
“I’m most looking forward to learning how to fit a kitchen and becoming more independent when I am working.”
