Advising the experts

IF you want expert advice… ask an expert: but where does an expert go for their advice?

In this instance, the experts at Wilson Browne Solicitors. That’s who the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors turned to when they needed expert advice for their recent seminar at Kettering.

John Gordon and Tom Warrender, both Partners at Wilson Browne Solicitors, presented at the RICS Landlord & Tenant Essential Update course held at Kettering Park Hotel last month. John also presented on the topic of Adverse Possession at another RICS event in March in Loughborough.

At the course, the pair provided an update on the latest developments in landlord and tenant case law, discussing an array of recent cases including those on interpretation of lease clauses, side letters, covenants, possession, and even a recent case citing Brexit as a factor to consider.

John heads up the Commercial Litigation Team at Wilson Browne Solicitors and Tom heads up the Commercial Property Team, both teams are recognised by the Legal 500.

Tom said: “John and I were honoured to be asked by RICS to speak and as our teams regularly work together it seemed sensible for the two of us to co-present at this event. When you look at the firms presenting on this particular RICS roadshow you have the likes of Burgess Salmon LLP, Mills & Reeve and so we were in good company. To be selected to present at this event shows the high esteem within which our Legal 500 recognised Commercial Property and Commercial Litigation Teams are held.”

Recent examples of work our well-respected teams have conducted include:-

– Acquisition of a site for the development of 64 affordable homes with a deal value of £6.5million+

-Completion of a Renewal Lease of prestigious premises in Colmore Row Birmingham for a national firm of surveyors

– Sale of a Methodist Church, the firm having acted on several such sales in the Nene Valley Circuit area in the last three years

– Sale of various parcels of land pursuant to a multi-party Promotion Agreement

– Completion of a renew lease for a local firm of accountants

– Advised a National Union in connection with the property aspects of its merger with another Association

Attendees left with an understanding of the latest landlord and tenant case law from the last 12 to 18 months, ensuring they are fully up to date when they next speak to both their landlord and tenant clients. There were additional pointers on cases relating to ratings law, Brexit and even professional negligence.

Tom added: “The point of our talk was not just to provide the update, but also to give some practical tips as to how to utilise that knowledge in their day-to-day work”
