Part of expansion strategy

DACHSER’S business in the UK has enjoyed significant growth in recent years, and 2017 is no exception. In the first half-year, sales turnover is up by almost 14 per cent compared with 2016, with the highest increases being seen in European export services as well as contract logistics.

Higher levels of business require a growing and skilled workforce, and Dachser is continually pro-active in developing training programmes for its existing staff as well as identifying and recruiting new talent.

As part of this strategy, its apprenticeship programme is expanding, and this September will see up to 15 new apprentices join the organisation across its four UK branches. After successful completion of their training period, apprentices are guaranteed a permanent full-time role, such is the organisation’s confidence in both the programme itself and the continuing growth of the business.

The programme provides A-level graduates with an outstanding opportunity to gain a real insight into the logistics industry and forge a successful career. Apprentices are trained over 12 to 24 months in all aspects of processes and procedures, across all areas of the business. The scheme is structured in accordance with various defined modules, and involves working in many different departments including operations, warehouse, sales, service and accounting. These placements are enhanced by academic learning modules which are supplied, monitored and assessed by Dachser’s DfE and Ofsted accredited training partner. The learning programme covers all supply chain functions and services provided by Dachser.

“Our schemes are designed to be very relevant for our business as well as being interesting and thought-provoking for our apprentices,” said Rachel Bussey, an HR Officer at Dachser and with responsibility for the organisation and administration of the company’s apprenticeship programme.

“It also, of course, needs to be fully compliant with the Government’s new guidelines and regulations for such schemes and with our programme being well-established for some years now, we are in a really good position to progress.”

Existing apprenticeship options for applicants to choose from at Dachser include Logistics Operations Management, Business Administration and Warehouse. From September, and with a clear eye on the looming challenges as well as opportunities arising from Brexit, the company is also introducing a new scheme called Customs and Business Administration. This will run over an 18-month period and combines elements of the Logistics Operations Management and Business Administration programmes with bespoke sections on Customs and related services.

“This new apprenticeship enhances and complements our existing portfolio very well, and has come about as part of our ongoing strategic planning in advance of Brexit,” said Nick Lowe, Dachser’s UK’s Managing Director. “With some level of customs interventions and clearance for European shipments somewhat inevitable in a post-Brexit environment, we feel that it is extremely important to give a clear emphasis to this topic – and what better way of doing it than by employing motivated young people and to provide them with specialist training as an integral part of their career development.”
