Yusen Logistics agrees deal to expand to new SEGRO Logistics Park in Northampton

IT IS SET to be the largest single warehouse in the Midlands logistics hub.

Yusen Logistics UK has become the first customer to lease a building at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton after signing to take almost 1.2 million sq ft of sustainable warehouse space at the new development.

The building will become the largest facility operated by Yusen worldwide. The company, a leading global supply chain logistics business, is an existing customer at SEGRO’s Grange Park estate in Northampton.

The lease, which is subject to detailed planning consent, is for Yusen to occupy a 1.191 million sq ft unit at the 600-acre industrial and logistics park, which links to the 35-acre Strategic Rail Freight Interchange.

It will enable the company to provide its customers with rail freight distribution and support them in reducing their carbon emissions.

The unit will be developed to high sustainability standards, targeting a ‘BREEAM Excellent’ rating. Features include PV panels and 220 EV charging units on site will power Yusen Logistics UK’s all-electric company car fleet.

The warehouse is expected to be fully operational by summer 2025. Construction of the rail freight terminal has been completed and Network Rail is scheduled to undertake the signalling work to connect the terminal to the rail network by the autumn of this year.

Yusen Logistics UK managing director David Goldsborough (pictured left) said: “This Yusen Logistics UK facility, in partnership with SEGRO, sets a new logistics industry benchmark and further emphasises our commitment to providing sustainable logistics services by 2050.

“We are both proud and excited to be a part of this exciting project and look forward to achieving our sustainability goals.”

Dan Holford, head of national markets at SEGRO, said: “We have been working hard to create the infrastructure and develop this site in preparation for the first warehouses. It is testament to our strong customer relationship that Yusen Logistics UK has chosen to grow with us and become a strategic occupier at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton.

“SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton not only represents a critical piece of our national industrial infrastructure for storing and transporting goods. It is enabling employment and economic growth and doing so with sustainability at its heart. We are particularly pleased that the rail freight terminal is proving to be an important factor in the decision to locate at this development.”

SEGRO is implementing a series of community programmes that aim to deliver long-term economic and social benefits to the region. Its Community Investment Plan for Northampton, launched in 2021, is delivering an employment and skills programme with local partner Track NN.

A community environmental project at St Crispin’s Community Centre in partnership with Groundwork Northampton, has created a wellbeing and wildlife garden. SEGRO has also launched a programme focusing on the logistics and construction industry in five local schools, in collaboration with Brackmills-based logistics company Goodwill Solutions.

SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton will deliver up to 5 million sq ft of modern distribution space and is adjacent to Junction 15 of the M1, close to Northampton. The site includes a 235-acre community park, with footpaths, cycle routes new woodlands and wetlands, 20km of hedgerows and 60,000 new trees.
