For the previous 12 weeks, Mick George Ltd and the Peterborough Telegraph have been working in partnership to seek applications for the 2015 Mick George Skip of Gold competition. The opportunity to win £1,000 was up for grabs for one lucky sports team and a community initiative.

Following an influx of applications the contestants were shortlisted to the 20 most deserving cases ranging dramatically from schools to friendship groups and a diverse sporting mixture. The voting lines have now closed and although it was a close encounter, the commendable winners of each category were Paston Scouts group and Netherton Football Club Under 11’s Girls Team who take the respective community and sport categories.

Nigel Roberts, Paston Scout Group leader said: ‘’Our group has been in the locality for over 100 years, consisting of beavers, cubs and scouts. Naturally throughout this period some major improvements have been made to the facilities from structural repair to general replacement or maintenance. Mick George Ltd are a wonderful advocate of the contribution local businesses can make to the local community. Without their continued support many clubs like ours wouldn’t be able to function to the levels we aspire to achieve.’’

Richard Evans, Netherton United Football Club Chairman said: ‘’Like many other clubs, all our managers, assistants and committee members are volunteers enabling female football players an outlet to enjoy themselves in a safe environment. This prize is a reward for the efforts that have gone in and provides much needed funding for training and playing equipment in the future. We are proud to be associated with a reputable company such as Mick George Ltd, on behalf of the entire club once again I extend our gratitude. ’’

Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George said: ‘’It was fantastic to see the community embrace the Skip of Gold competition, the support that the various groups received was overwhelming. This is the second time that we have run the competition and it’s clear to see by the vast number of entries just how important this support can be for the development of each nomination.’’

‘’We are increasingly active within the Peterborough area supporting activities, individuals, clubs and charities at all levels from grass roots to professional outfits. The Mick George Skip of Gold competition provides a little more insight to what the community really care about and are involved in within their daily lives. The £1,000 prize fund will undoubtedly make a real difference, and should help build to a brighter future. We are proud of our community initiatives and look forward to any forthcoming engagement.’’
