Travis Perkins renews commitment to Armed Forces Covenant and unveils plaque commemorating its wartime heroes

BUILDING materials distributor Travis Perkins plc has renewed its commitment to support Armed Forces personnel by re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

The company, whose head office is in Northampton, has a long history of providing training and job opportunities to service personnel as they leave the forces and prepare for civilian life.

It has signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant since 2017 and hosted a memorial service for 89 former employees who served in the Second World War, unveiling a special plaque at the service attended by Northampton South MP Andrew Lewer, Major General Tim Hyams, chief executive of ABF The Soldiers Charity and guests from the Ministry Of Defence, the Royal British Legion and cadet forces of the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Travis Perkins chief executive Nick Roberts said: “As a business at the heart of our communities, we have employed hundreds of service leavers and recognise the great value they bring to our business. This re-signing of the covenant is an affirmation of our commitment to ensuring the group continues to be an armed forces-friendly organisation which celebrates our ex-Forces, reservist and cadet forces colleagues and supports them with training and great career opportunities.”

The memorial plaque to former colleagues who served in the Second World War reflected the company’s heritage, he added. Travis Perkins employs 20,000 staff in the UK, including around 1,000 in Northampton. “A great opportunity for us who work here today to acknowledge their sacrifice and be thankful for their bravery,” Mr Roberts said.

The plaque unveiling was also attended by Travis Perkins staff and members of the Armed Forces Community, where 60-plus current colleagues who are reservists or who have previously served in the armed forces, meet to support each other and work to improve awareness of the talent and value veterans can bring to the group’s businesses.
