Great people make a great business

People are a business’s most important asset, so an effective recruitment strategy is essential whether you’re a start-up or an established company. You can choose to outsource to a recruitment agency or manage it internally; whatever suits your resource capability and availability.

People are a business’s most important asset, so an effective recruitment strategy is essential whether you’re a start-up or an established company. You can choose to outsource to a recruitment agency or manage it internally; whatever suits your resource capability and availability. There’s a lot to consider when selecting successful employees and a good place to start is to consider the contractual arrangement, or in other words, do you require temporary or permanent resource, or maybe a bit of both.

Temporary Employment

Specific projects or peaks in business are ideally managed by temporary workers. As an employer, you have flexibility to gear up or down depending on work fluctuations that take you beyond typical workforce capacity. For new businesses, it’s also a good way to build an understanding of likely work levels to inform a more permanent staffing strategy. However, a more transient workforce can mean more training and inductions as temporary workers come and go, but a good recruitment agency will work with you to manage this and maintain productivity. There is also employment law and various regulations to be aware of, but again these will be explained by your agency.

Permanent Employment

With the right permanent employees in place, there is more stability and many would argue, greater commitment and loyalty to make your business succeed. A permanent arrangement also means all employees basic rights, such as annual leave, Health & safety and performance management, become your responsibility.

Paul Hooper, Director at Impact Recruitment Services, said “Both worker arrangements have distinct advantages so in consultation with a client and their business needs, we often create a workforce strategy that includes both for optimum performance and cost efficiencies. We also recommend a temp-to-perm arrangement where appropriate.”

Temporary to Permanent Employment

Sometimes called a ‘test-drive’ it allows both the employer and employee to try out a role before making it a permanent arrangement. Recruiting initially as a temporary worker means the role responsibilities get done, maintaining productivity, whilst also an opportunity to look at the workers skills, personality, and cultural fit for longer-term employment. And there’s the Agency Workers regulations or AWR, which ensures temporary workers receive the same benefits as permanent employees on projects that last 12 weeks or more, making the 12-week point an ideal time to make the switch to permanent employment.

Paul Hooper continued, “Our priority is always the satisfaction of our clients and our candidates, and this dictates the right employment strategy to take. There are a number of other things to consider to, such as recruitment advertising, candidate selection and interviewing, all of which we work with our clients on to ensure the right employee selection is made.”
