CLARE Elsby from forward-thinking chartered accountants Elsby & Co has given an insight into the firm’s ethos at a motivational workshop.

The Business Development Director from the accountancy firm, which has an office at the Innovation Centre in Market Harborough, was invited to share its refreshing approach to business.

Individuals from the private and public sector were at the event, held at Barton Hall in Kettering, which looked at the benefits of being a good employer. Representatives of two Market Harborough-based companies spoke at the event. Nicola Denny of May Marketing talked about how ‘your people are your brand’ while Rachel Helmn of The Hum looked at employee wellbeing and improving productivity.

The importance of engagement was highlighted by Paul Beesley of Beyond Theory who said: “64 per cent of employees are disengaged from their jobs, but want to be engaged and, therefore, finding the key to employee engagement is crucial to both productivity and a better working environment for everyone.”

Feedback from Clare’s session was that her talk about the firm’s journey was insightful and a practical example of how a firm can take the best from large companies like Virgin and Google.

The firm, with another office in Sywell, is committed to regular mentoring, a fair appraisal process and training to improve professional and personal skills and was named as a finalist in the national Family Business Awards in 2014.

Clare said: “We recognise that our brand is not just for our customers, but has to engage our staff and future recruits. Culture and values when recruiting are just as important as skills, to a large extent as long as the core skills are present, the rest can be taught.

“A decent salary package with flexible benefits is crucial to good recruitment and we combine this with a wellbeing programme.

This includes a twice weekly delivery of fruit (we still have cakeage!), while flexible working allows for exercise at lunchtime.”
